Smudgecake recovers at UC Davis after suffering a stroke. Please donate to our medical fund today to cover his care and help other animals in need!
Smudgecake the pig was born into sanctuary two years ago after his mother bravely jumped off the back of a transport truck headed to slaughter. He and two of his brothers live in peace at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary in Colfax, CA. On Monday, October 9th, Smudgecake awoke unable to walk, was not interested in breakfast, and showed concerning neurological signs of distress. We rushed him to UC Davis Large Animal Hospital where he remained for four days. He had extensive neurological testing done, was put under anesthesia twice, had radiographs taken, antibiotics, a joint tap, and repair of some cracks in his deformed hooves (he was born with extra toes) while he was sedated. It was determined that he likely had a stroke, a rare occurrence in a pig his age, and even rarer for him to recover from. With amazing care from his veterinary team and lots of love, Smudgecake did indeed recover and has returned home to Blackberry Creek! He is currently on stall rest and will be checked by his normal doctor this week for possible reintegration into his pig family. He will likely never return to "normal" and will always be prone to neurological issues, but he is feeling much better and continues to be an incredible ambassador for all who come to learn how loving and intelligent pigs are.
With extensive care of Willy, our elderly horse, last spring, we are in need of a boost to our medical fund to cover Smudgecake's care. Please consider donating any amount HERE and spread the word to help us replenish our medical fund for other rescued animals in need. Thank you for your support; we could not do this important work without you!
